Marseille squeeze through to the knock-out stages
ERIC Gerets' side beat Brann Bergen of Norway 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night. That earned them a 3-1 aggregate win and a place in the Champions League group phase - but it was far from a convincing performance by the Ligue 1 outfit.

Danic is now setting the pace for passers
VALENCIENNES midfielder Gaël Danic is the new leader of the table which acknowledges the part played by those who create goals for others to score. Danic has been credited with two decisive passes during the 3-1 defeat of Lorient on Matchday 3.

Matchday 3 Round-up: The cream rises to the top
MARSEILLE and Lyon moved to the head of Ligue 1 after wins over Le Havre and Grenoble respectively, while Bordeaux edged into third following their 2-0 triumph over Nantes on Sunday night. Stephane Sessegnon grabbed his first PSG goal to earn his side a 1-1 draw at Sochaux.

Matchday 3 Sunday feature: Bordeaux 2-0 Nantes
FERNANDO Cavenaghi set Bordeaux on the way to a comfortable 2-0 home win over local rivals Nantes which lifted Les Girondins to the head of a five-strong group on six points after three rounds of Ligue 1.

Matchday 3 Sunday Round-up: Sow's a sizzler
SUBSTITUTE Moussa Sow scored a dramatic late winner for Rennes as they secured their first win of the season - for the second time in successive home games scoring twice in added time as they beat Lille 2-1. Nice move up to joint third after a 1-0 win over Auxerre.

Two Marseille fans killed en route to match at Le Havre
TWO people were killed and 30 others injured - four seriously - when a coach carrying Marseille supporters to the match at Le Havre was involved in an horrific accident. The match was dedicated to the memory of those who died, and there was a one-minute silence before kick-off.

Matchday 3 Saturday round-up: Zenden wins it
ON a sad day for their club, Marseille moved to the top of the table after Boudewijn Zenden (left) scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at Le Havre. Sochaux finally got off the mark with a 1-1 draw against PSG and Valenciennes beat Lorient 3-1 in the evening's highest-scoring game.

Matchday 3 Saturday Feature: Lyon 2-0 Grenoble
SEVEN-times champions Lyon knocked Grenoble off their perch at the top of Ligue 1 with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Stade de Gerland. Karim Benzema and Jean Makoun (pictured) netted the goals for Claude Puel's side, who trail Marseille at the head of Ligue 1 on goals scored only.

Update: Sommeil reported in a "stable condition"
VALENCIENNES defender David Sommeil, who collapsed with a heart condition during training on Wednesday, is reported to be recovering slowly from a "state of sedation" at the local hospital and is in a "stable" condition.

Lyon stars on target as "new" France win
THE "new era" began for the French national team with a hard-fought 3-2 win against Sweden in Gothenburg - and it was home-based LFP players who had the starring roles. Karim Benzema of Lyon scored the first goal, and his team-mate Sydney Govou decisively added the other two.

STEVE Savidan is best-known for his goalscoring ability - but with his new club, Caen, the former Valenciennes striker is quickly establishing himself as a creator of chances as well. After two matchdays, he tops the special LFP chart for goalscoring Assists.

New draw for early rounds of League Cup
THE re-draw for the first and second rounds of the League Cup has thrown up some interesting matches, none more so than a local derby between Metz and Reims. The draw had to be staged a second time after the re-instatement of Paris St Germain when the club won a court appeal against it's one-year suspension from the competition.

Matchday 2 Review: New boys surprise Ligue 1
AFTER two matchdays Mecha Bazdarevic's rank outsiders are sitting proudly at the head of Ligue 1, the only team to have taken maximum points from their opening two games. But watch out for Marseille! Eric Gerets' team showed that their four-goal haul at Rennes on Matchday 1 was no fluke.

Matchday 2 Sunday Feature: Marseille 4-0 Auxerre
MARSEILLE eased effortlessly into second place in Ligue 1 with a stylish and comprehensive victory over Auxerre at the Stade Velodrome. Mamadou Niang set the ball rolling with an early goal and l'OM never looked back.

Matchday 2 Sunday round-up: Grenoble go top
IN Sunday's early matches, a goal by veteran striker Nassim Akrour (pictured) gave Grenoble a 1-0 victory over Rennes in their first home Ligue 1 match in 45 years - and sent the promoted team to the top of Ligue 1. Meanwhile champions Lyon had to settle for a 0-0 draw away to Lorient.

Matchday 2 Saturday Feature: PSG 1-0 Bordeaux
PSG centre-forward Guillaume Hoarau (pictured) scored the winning goal as Paul Le Guen's side earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bordeaux in the big Saturday night clash at the Parc des Princes. It was PSG's first win of the season, and ought to kick-start 2008-09 for the capital outfit.

Matchday 2 Saturday round-up: Le Mans rock Rudi
HIGHLY-fancied Lille crashed to a shock 3-1 home defeat against coach Rudi Garcia's former club Le Mans. But Steve Savidan had a better time against his former employers, netting in Caen's 3-1 win over Valenciennes. Read about all Saturday's action across France.

Matchday 1 Saturday round-up: Thriller at Rennes
THERE was a sensational start to the new season at Rennes, where title contenders Marseille were held to a 4-4 draw after leading 3-1. Ligue 1 new boys Grenoble hit back late to record a 2-1 victory at Sochaux, while Bordeaux came from 1-0 down to beat Caen 2-1. Read all the reports from a fabulous first night of action.

PSG get a League Cup reprieve - at least for now
THE format for this season's French League Cup is in confusion after a decision of the Administrative Court in Paris to suspend the disciplinary ban on PSG's participation. LFP President Frédéric Thiriez (left) reacted with dismay, and the competition cannot now have its scheduled start on Tuesday August 19.

Matchday 1 Sunday Feature: Lyon 3-0 Toulouse
THE champions beat Toulouse 3-0 on the opening day of the season thanks to a debut strike from John Makoun and two goals from Karim Benzema (above, right, with Juninho). And after just 90 minutes of the new season Lyon are already back in their familiar place in the Ligue 1 standings.
